Compatibility Based Matching

OKCupid Compatibility-Based Matching reimagines the dating experience as one rooted in self-discovery and psychologically informed compatibility, moving beyond surface-level attraction or shared interests. Users engage with personality assessments such as MBTI, Love Languages, and Attachment Styles to generate rich personality profiles and dynamic compatibility scores. These insights enable exploration of deeper dimensions like communication styles, core values, and emotional needs.

Building on OkCupid's legacy of Match % and question-based matching, this initiative introduces a strategic shift toward personality-led discovery under the positioning "Dating with intention starts with knowing yourself." By delivering immediate single-player value through meaningful personality insights, the experience remains engaging from day one—reducing churn in low-liquidity markets and powering a CRM flywheel with introspective content.

The approach also addresses key platform challenges, with strong appeal to women and the potential to improve female return rates, while unlocking new opportunities for engagement, monetization, and an estimated $45M revenue upside in the U.S. market.

Compatibility Based Matching

Context

As a long-established platform, OkCupid faces the need to evolve in order to attract a new generation of younger users with shifting expectations around dating. This project supports a strategic pivot toward a more intentional and self-aware experience, captured in the positioning "Dating with intention starts with knowing yourself." Building on OkCupid's legacy of Match % and question-based matching, the initiative introduces personality-led discovery and deeper compatibility insights, reframing the product around self-understanding as the foundation for meaningful connections.

Problem

OkCupid is facing increasing challenges in sustaining meaningful user engagement within a saturated dating landscape. Swipe fatigue has diminished the effectiveness of traditional browsing patterns, leading to disengagement and reduced user satisfaction. The experience remains largely dependent on securing matches, offering little to no standalone value for users who do not immediately connect with others—particularly in lower-liquidity environments. This dynamic contributes to a perception of shallow interactions, where decisions are driven more by surface-level signals than deeper compatibility. As a result, the platform struggles with a low female return rate, highlighting the need for a more intentional, value-driven experience that fosters trust, depth, and sustained engagement.

Goal

  • Offering deeper profiles, not just photos
  • Single-player mode (quizzes, insights) = instant utility
  • Matching on patterns (e.g., emotional styles) not just preferences
  • Research shows this model strongly resonates with women
